Go #Barefoot4Them with @LDBlakeley on #GoBarefootDay (& #NationalNailPolishDay!)

HAPPY JUNE, EVERYONE!

In poking around the web (as one does) for blog ideas, I discovered that not only is June 1 National Go Barefoot Day, it's also National Nail Polish Day. I don't know about you, but as far as I'm concerned, the two sort of go hand-in-hand (foot-in-foot? Nah, that doesn't quite work.)

Yes, I take foot selfies. No, I don't have any shame.
Enjoying the sands of New Brunswick's beautiful Parlee Beach!
While a day to kick off your shoes and let your toes go freerange might seem a bit frivolous, the day actually got its start after the Indian Ocean Tsunami by the group Soles4Souls as a means to raise funds by those affected by the disaster. Still going strong after more than a decade, the Nashville-based charity's mission statement is to: create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. And, to date, the organization has collected and distributed 30 million pairs of new and gently used shoes to individuals in 127 countries and all 50 U.S. states.

Soles4Souls - Wearing Out Poverty

National Go Barefoot Day was created as a way to raise awareness for their worthy endeavour. They have an extensive website, so if you want to get more deets or would like to get involved, check them out here: barefoot4them.org

Now, obviously National Nail Polish Day isn't nearly as philathropic an observance as National Go Barefoot Day (it was created by the folks at Essie, after all.) But is there anything quite as lovely as the first pedicure of open-toed shoe season? I don't think so.

So kick off your shoes and celebrate both. And, hey, why not take that pedicure money, donate it to the folks at Soles4Souls and DIY your toes just this once.

Need some inspiration?

With your toes ready for the beach, all that's left to do is grab yourself something spicy to read while you soak up those rays!

Might I suggest this sizzling collection of sexy alpha short stories...

Keeping Warm and Gettin' Owned (By The Alpha, that is!) @LDBlakeley #MMRomance

Is it really May 1, already? You'd certainly never know it by the weather. Silly me, I mistakenly went by the calendar (and the fact that we had 20-plus-degree temperatures just last week) and purchased all of the pretties to spruce up my rooftop patio. Unfortunately, it's so cold again I now have a makeshift garden in my dining room. Hopefully, I can replant and move everything outside this week.

In the meantime, here's a little something to heat things up...

World Book Day Is Coming April 23, 2017!

Hey there, Romance Lovers!

It's Kali Willows, that crazy Canadian author with a little spring fever and a lot to do these days. So what is world book day? Great Question!

World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

Currently, I'm in the middle of a fantastic internship as I complete the final requirements for my Post-Grad Public Relations Course. I was fortunate enough to land a position with a Toronto-based company: MMK Marketing. This fresh, brainy boutique agency of retail and digital marketing specialists have got it all, and they're showing me the way in a heavy duty learning opportunity of a lifetime.

How could this experience be related to this author? Because today, I received an assignment that was like the Mother Ship calling me home!

I was assigned to collect answers from my teammates about favourite books and authors and created an MMK Marketing Pinterest account and board to showcase their choices.

If you click on the above Pinterest link, you'll see all the amazing books they listed and perhaps even discover a few new-to-you books and authors. There are three boards: favourite children's books, favourite business, and the one that sang to my heart today, favourite Canadian authors/books!

Here are just a few samples of these selections! See any favourite Canadians here? *cough*

So now I'm back to the grind, work, work, work, but this Canadian has a shared anthology out right now, and it's my pleasure to share this contribution with you in time for World Book Day!

What are some of your favourite books / authors?

Happy Reading,

The Wicked Bad by Karyn Gerrard

Blurb:  Dark and brooding, Nick Crocetti is a bad boy in looks and demeanor. Veronica Barnes needs a new start, and Nick is a complication she doesn’t need.
Can they break down the barriers of past heartbreak, or is Veronica just a good girl who longs to rub against “the wicked bad”?

Excerpt:  She followed him toward the beach. The shoreline wasn't very big, but private, as you couldn't see the road or much else from their vantage point. Wonder how many other women he brought here, she thought cynically.

He spread the blanket and assisted her in sitting down. Again, the touch of his hand made her face flush as well as parts further south. Nick sat next to her with one leg bent and he rested his arm on the top of his knee. They sat quietly and gazed out over the water. The waves caressed the sand with a serene almost hypnotic sound.

“I saw you talking to that wuss, Jake Spooner, as I left the other day. I can imagine what he said about me,” Nick said in a voice so soft, she hardly recognized it as his.

Veronica cleared her throat uncomfortably.

Nick laughed. “I see. Go on, amuse me, what did he say?”

“Um, he said you were in prison—” she began.

“Jail. Not prison,” he retorted.

“There’s a difference?”

“You’ve got the cop for a brother, you tell me,” Nick snapped. He shook his head, more gently he said, “Sorry. It’s a touchy subject. City jail, for assault and destruction of property. Prison usually means a state or federal beef. Mine was local and a long time ago. I did my time and it’s over. I don’t like talking about it.”
“He called you a thug and said you deal drugs among other things.” She shouldn’t be telling him this, but the words tumbled out of her.

“Really? And still you went out with me? Are you some thrill seeker, one of those good girls eager to rub up against some wicked bad? Is that why you’re here? I’ll be as bad as you want, just say the word.”
His voice grew tight and edgy. Barely restrained anger simmered below the surface, she could hear it.

“I’m just telling you what Jake said, you asked.”

Nick stared at her for several moments. “Yeah. I did. Sorry. I haven’t been out on a date in awhile.”

“You haven’t been with any women...”

“Oh, I didn't say I haven’t been with women, just haven’t been on a date.” The right corner of his mouth twitched in what Veronica supposed was amusement.

Karyn Gerrard Bio:

Karyn lives in a small town in the western corner of Ontario, Canada. She wiles away her spare time writing and reading romance while drinking copious amounts of Earl Grey tea.

Tortured heroes are a must. A multi-published author with a few best-sellers under her belt, Karyn loves to write in different genres and time periods, though historicals are her favorite. As long as she can avoid being hit by a runaway moose in her wilderness paradise she assumes everything is golden.

Karyn’s been happily married for a long time to her own hero. His encouragement keeps her moving forward.
