Keeping Up With Kacey (@KaceyHammell) #Writing #Life #Summertime

Good morning everyone! And Happy Sunday. Mid July and this year's summer in Ontario, Canada has had it's ups and downs. With more rain than we've had in years, beach days for many have been few and far between. While my hay fields are loving the long drinks of water they're getting, I'm not as enthusiastic about it. It has to be dry longer than a day or two in order to get the fields cut and baled. Basically it's a cut one day, let it lie for a full day to fully dry out and then bale it. But with sporadic days of sun then rain, it's been a struggle. Plus the time frame of hubby's work schedule and mine are also interfering.

Speaking of which, I started a full time job outside the house recently and it's cutting into my writing. I'm doing my best but it's difficult to have the energy after a long, fast paced day and a quite physical job. I've resigned myself to weekend writing. But things are progressing well and I am somewhat managing. My online presence is dismal, but it's unavoidable these days. I've never been so grateful to sleep at the end of a day. Being a stay-at-home mom for fifteen years, I was busy and my days were always full, but I appreciate the writing time a lot more now, as well as my sleep. I could stay up until two in the morning and be up at 5:30 and go all day without needing a nap. Now, I'm in bed by nine p.m. and getting up at five a.m. is hard as hell. But we all do what we must. Adjust and adapt has always been a way of life for me.

But I have bought myself a new car. Being on the road more now for the job and needing something a lot newer for five days a week, I splurged a bit and have a shiny new toy. I love it. So, SO comfortable! I haven't decided yet, but I may be driving it to a book signing in Kalamazoo, Michigan in October. I haven't looked at all my travel options as yet (and it's like a ten hour drive), but I know I'll have something more comfortable than my previous car, and more reliable, should I decide to drive all that way.

And in writing news, I signed a contract about a week ago. Another story coming out in the fall with Evernight Publishing. It is the sequel to Stirring Up Dirty, and the 2nd in the Stirred by Love series, called, Stirring Up Glory. I loved writing this story a lot. Drew and Glory, whom everyone met in book one finally come to a head with their past and their ire toward one another. It's pretty intense, but oh, so yummy, too. *g*  I'm steadily working on two WIPs currently. One is a wolf shifter, the other is a suspense. I'm having fun with all the characters. It's a new thing for me, working on 2 stories at once, but I'm managing. The suspense has a firm deadline that must be met, but the wolves are demanding a lot of attention to. And a writer should never ignore the voices in their head. *g*

I also have a new member of the family. Meet, Toby, my "grandson", who belongs to my oldest son and his girlfriend. They are both on their way to college/university in Sept, and have added a bundle of joy -- of the four-legged kind thankfully -- to their lives. Toby is a handful, so very energetic that his "Grandma" can't keep up, but a lot of joy too. Peaches (my cockapoo) has warmed up to him some, but she misses her peace and quiet days. LOL

Until next month, hope you're reading some great stories and enjoying the long summer days.

Spring Update from Layna Pimentel

Hello from Sault Ste. Marie!

Yeehaw! Most of the snow is melted from my back yard, and literally all gone from my front yard. We've been busy prepping the yard and the pond to put the goldfish back into it. I can't begin to tell you how much this change of season is appreciated. The last couple of months have been exhausting, stressful on so many levels and depressing. That is, until March 8th rolled around.

Why do you ask? Well, my husband and I became first time grand parents. I won't like that the news of the pregnancy was a shock because it was, but one look at this angel on March 8th and we were in love all over again.

Here's a few pics from her one month anniversary.

She's a snoring, beautiful princess and we love her no matter what.

In other news, I've been happily working a new regency project slated for a summer release. It's kinda  sorta a secret project. As soon as I can share more I will. I do have another secret project slated for late fall too, and more news will be coming soon about that one down the line. All that news aside, I do have 2 paranormals coming hopefully before the year is out in addition to those historical romances.

To be honest, I never planned on having all these releases in the last half of this year, much less have to shift my editors around. Things change all the time, obligations and personal stuff alike. So when you have to keep pushing things out I feel awful. Even more terrible when I've noticed now that my one editor has changed a policy to include a deposit at time of booking. So ya. I feel like an ass now.

Toss in that I have a few rights returning to me in the coming months and I so need to get those organized too. So much to do and such little time.

Well, there you have it. That's the most recent news coming out of my corner in the province. Hopefully, by next month I can share some more news about my summer release, or even share a teaser from my upcoming paranormal which is a twist on Little Red Riding Hood. See Kacey! I have been slowly working on that beast. That book is due with my editor by June 1 too, so you can imagine the mad dash of revisions I'm in the middle of.

So now that I've shared what I'm working on, do you have any plans for this spring or summer?

Spring fever! Happy Spring Equinox!!!

Who's got spring fever?...This girl!

Happy Spring Equinox
🌷🌹🌻

In like a lion, out like a lamb?

The winter blues are fading fast, but every time we get a nice spell of seasonal warmth and sunshine, we get hit again with the typical Canadian-confused climate.

Blistering winds and drifting snow-to-ice storms, and days later, major melt-downs and water-rise advisories. Us Canadians can't keep straight whether to wear our rubber boots or flip flops by the time mid-March rolls around!

Now, that being said, warm for the average Canadian is disputable for our more southern neighbours. After a winter that makes most of nature want to hibernate deep inside the earth, a day of cool breeze and sunshine is enough for us to toss our coats and boots in the cellar and consider short sleeves once again.

I know, personally, I've got spring fever when some of the following things start to happen:

  • When driving, it's too hot with even a light jacket on
  • I'm stuck deciding between the heat and air conditioning in my car
  • More mud and sand is sprawled over my wooden floors than in my driveway
  • The dust that's accumulated from the wood stove is considerably noticeable
  • The urge to clean wraps around my soul
  • Cabin fever sets in and I need to have daily adventures
  • BBQ'ing in bare feet on the deck is tolerable, even though there are remnants of snow and ice around the yard
  • The duvet cover on the bed becomes too hot for comfort at night
  • The urge to crack the window open at night taunts me

So, tell me, how do you know when spring fever hits you? Are there any tell-tale signs or things you feel compelled to do?

Happy reading!

Retail Therapy with @LDBlakeley #SorryNotSorry

We made it! It's March, which means spring is right around the corner... right?

I don't know about you, but gloomy winter weather doesn't do a thing for my spirits. And it hasn't even been that bad here in Toronto, not by a long shot. Not compared with most of the rest of the country. It doesn't mean I  haven't resorted to a bit of retail therapy to boost my mood from time to time over the past few months. I mean, we can't rely on wine for everything, right?

One of my favourite indulgences when it comes to hauling myself out of the doldrums is – surprise – books! They never let you down. Your size is always in stock. And if you haven't managed to shed those few extra holiday pounds, it doesn't matter – one size really does fit all!

Of course that sexy little one-click can be a dangerous thing when not used wisely. And sometimes it's just so hard to resist it's tiny, orange cyber-siren song. But I've found a solution so worthy of sharing!

A few years ago I discoverd Bookoutlet.ca (for our American friends, there's a sister site at Bookoutlet.com) and good LORD what a find. It's like going into one of those discount pop-up shops that appear for months at a time in various locations around the city. Only you can shop in your underwear living room!

It's a bargain-hunter's /book lover's paradise. Prices are deeply discounted (which makes both my heart and my credit card sing!) And while they sometimes may not have the exact title (ie - newest release) you're looking for, I've always found plenty to choose from. There is a New Release section that seems to get refreshed daily, though, so it's not like your shopping in a Way Back machine. My favourite is the Scratch and Dent section. I have quite a few titles from that category that are in near-pristine condition (the worst I've seen is the tell-tale ink mark along the fore-edge, signifying the discount pile).

Behold the booky goodness that arrived on my doorstep yesterday:

Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer by Roy P. Clark | The Compleat Ankh-Morpork by Terry Pratchett (this lovely is hardcover) | Thingamajigs and Whatchamacallits (Unfamiliar Terms For Familiar Things) by Rod L. Evans | The 2,548 Best Things Anybody Ever Said by Robert Byrne | The 2,548 Wittiest Things Anybody Ever Said by Robert Byrne

I've probably ordered from this place a dozen times or so and have always had fantastic luck. Shipping is even quite reasonable (not to mention speedy), a real find considering how weighty books can get and how expensive Canada Post tends to be.

They have a storefront location in St. Catharines, a mere hour's drive from my front door. I'm afraid I'd need to pack a lunch, though, if I were to brave 500,000 square feet of books. Plus I'd have to put on pants. I think I'll stick to online for now.
Go forth and shop, my pretties!

New Year's Resolution ~ Tackling my ever-growing TBR pile by @jsubject #amreading

Hello everyone! Happy 2017! It's great to be back at Romance Eh? Canadian Style for a new year. And we have some fresh faces here. They are new to the blog, but not new to writing. I hope you've enjoyed reading their posts so far.

Today I want to talk about the dreaded TBR (to be read) pile. If you're like me, yours is HUGE! I have books to read on my Kindle app, on my Kobo app, audio books on my Audible app, and physical books on my bookshelf. (Though I have to on my side table reminding me to hurry up and finish reading my current book so I can read them.)

Last year, I didn't read (or listen to) enough, and failed to reach my Goodreads reading goal. In fact, I haven't reached my goal since 2012, even though I reduced the number each year.

This year, I WILL reach my goal and, with any luck, surpass it. How? To start, I've gotten rid of all games on my phone. If I need something to do while I'm on it, I will read. Plus, I'm going to listen to more audio books. I still get to enjoy books that way, and can do it while busy with other things like cooking and other household chores.

My goal this year is the same as last year. 25 books. I WILL reach it. :) And I'm off to a great start, finishing an audio book yesterday while doing the dishes, and an ebook last night. That's two down and twenty-three to go (of the hundreds on my TBR pile). I've got this.

Here's what I just finished and what I'm reading next...

Tell me, what's on your TBR pile?

What is your reading goal for this year?

Looking to add to your TBR pile?
Enter my contest!

In my 2016 in Review blog post, I'm hosting a contest where you can WIN a signed paperback, or an audio book. Contest ends January 15, 2017, so hurry on over and enter!

IT TOOK A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE will release January 30, 2017

The zombie story I wrote based on a dream will release at the end of this month. It's a New Adult Interracial Small Town Romance that takes place during a Zombie Apocalypse. Don't worry, there's no zombie love in this story. Just a couple who weren't supposed to get together if her parents had anything to say about it.

You can pre-order it already from Amazon, Google Play, iBooks, and Kobo.

HAPPY READING!

Author Jessica E. Subject wants to share a secret with you @jsubject #books #romance #giveaway

I have a secret to tell you...

It's not a juicy secret, but not one that many people know, especially my readers. But, I want to share it with you. Okay, here it goes... My new release, BRYCE, is set in London, Ontario, Canada. The story does leave Earth, but the first scene is set in a London residential neighborhood, a city very close to where I live. And, you're the first to know the next story in the series, JAGER, will return to London for part of the adventure.

Here's an excerpt from the beginning of the story, when they're in London:

Bryce raised his crossbow, lining his sights on the creature standing amongst the bushes, its branch-like tentacles undulating in the gentle breeze. Focusing the crosshairs on the alien’s torso, he drew in a deep breath. He had one shot. If he missed, the Erebus would cry out and alert the natives of Terra to its existence, resulting in more casualties. At first glance, no one on the planet, also called Earth, would believe an Erebus anything more than an overgrown bush, but Bryce knew the truth. He’d trained to hunt the creatures from childhood.

Each step carefully placed, he advanced until he stood twenty feet from the Erebus, no chance to miss the shot. With a slight movement of his finger, he squeezed the trigger, sending a zuranium-tipped arrow racing toward the alien.

“Quinn, would you grab me another garbage bag?”

Fornax. The creature lunged toward the female voice, Bryce’s arrow stuck in one of its tentacles. A kill, but not instant.

He loaded another arrow. At the risk of being seen, he charged through the hedges. He had to cut the Erebus off before it had a chance to kill the Terran. He leaped over metal furniture and large urns, keeping his focus on the creature.

“What the hell? Get out of my yard!”

The woman rushed him, but Bryce darted around her. When the Erebus lumbered in front of him, he raised his weapon and fired. A clean shot to the middle. The creature dropped like a fallen log, crushing the furniture it landed on.

Bryce loaded the crossbow again. No time to celebrate the kill. He had to worry about the possibility of other Erebus in the area, along with the Terran woman who had seen him. Instead of running away screaming, as he’d expected her to do, she stared, wide-eyed in horror. Not at him, but the Erebus. Her body trembled as she shuffled backward, mumbling incomprehensible words.

An unexpected sense of familiarity washed over him. He couldn’t draw his attention away from her slim figure, the way her long brown hair flowed over her shoulders. Far more attractive than he’d pictured the Terrans when others talked about them. He took a closer glance. Lalia? How had she traveled so far from home without anyone knowing? She was no stranger, and definitely not Terran. Or, perhaps she was simply a doppelganger of the woman he’d once loved. He had the sudden urge to comfort her, relieve her worry. Hold her in his arms the way he had many years ago. But what if the missing princess had somehow made her way to a planet unaware life existed beyond their own? After she’d left Hemera and him behind without so much as a goodbye, he’d searched everywhere. Though not once had he thought to look on Terra.

A ground-shattering bellow pierced the night. Bryce spun around, finding himself face-to-face with another Erebus. It stared at him with beady red eyes. Thick black goop dripped from its mouth.

Bryce raised his bow, but the creature slammed him with one of its tentacles, flinging him back. The Erebus lunged at Lalia.

Rolling to his knees, Bryce aimed and fired. He hit the alien from behind, launching it forward. Onto his former lover. Slinging the bow over his shoulder, he raced toward her. The creature’s tentacles still pulsed, even though dead. Careful not to trip himself up, he shoved his hands under the creature’s torso and heaved it off her.

Lalia stood immediately and wiped the black goop from her clothes, as if she hadn’t been flattened by an alien. “They weren’t supposed to follow me. I was supposed to be safe here.”

BRYCE (Galactic Defenders #1)

A dedicated Defender…

Bryce fell in love once, but after Lalia was ripped away from him, he locked his heart from feeling anything for anyone else. Instead, he devotes his life to the Galactic Alliance, killing every bloodthirsty Erebus he comes across.

A shunned princess…

Lalia Comosova fell in love with the wrong man. When her parents learned of her transgressions, they sent her to Earth to hide her error in judgment from the rest of the kingdom.

A second chance?

When these lovers are reunited after many years apart, they have a chance to find happiness together. But fate steps in and threatens to rip them apart as it did years ago.

Canadian Summer Adventures - Who wants to EXPLORE this summer?

What interesting adventures do you have
planned for the summer?

Week long trips? Day trips? Exploring? Picnics?

Having two young kids who will be out of school, the pressure to plan is on again. Outside of a few weeks of day camp, swimming lessions and eldest minion's 10 day trip for leadership camp, there are some local adventures I'd love to try with them this year.

My main driving inspiration to explore this summer, are CAVES! I've written about caves in 2 of my books so far, and still can't get enough. My obsession is the magnificent structures and hidden treasures that lay beneath the surface. I adore the mystery and intrigue, along with the geographic anomalies you can find deep inside these remarkable places. The mineral deposits, how time, water and wear have defined these remote spaces into spectacular places for adventure. Oh, the extra story inspirations I expect to find inside these gems!!!

Closest to home and top of the list are:

http://tyendinagacaves.blogspot.ca/

http://www.bonnecherecaves.com/

Considering I've never actually ventured inside a cave yet, myself, I'm grateful for the amazing photgraphic adventures I've indulged in thus far. My two stories that incorporate my love of caves are:

Dragon Temptation - a 1 Night Stand Story
&
A Cougar Among Wolves - A Black Hills Wolves story.

Dragon Temptation
Blurb:

Cindy Dunham has become sexually emaciated, after a long dry spell and no prospect of romance in her near future. With her best friend’s upcoming wedding, loneliness is taking the lead, and she is starving for erotic rhapsody. The prospect of a blind date for the nuptials is embarrassing, but a necessary evil. The match Madame Evangeline finds for her leaves her reeling with conflict and jealousy. Will she ever get her carnal hunger gratified?

Yong Li, is no longer satisfied being the third wheel in his brother’s love life. Desperate to branch out and have an experience all his own, he is fraught with his ancient affliction that runs interference with the prospect of any normal relationship. Having had a life altering 1 Night Stand before, he seeks the help of his old friend, Madame Eve to find a new mate just for him.

A Cougar Among Wolves
Blurb:

A sadistic attack leaves Klaya, a Puma Clan Cougar, critically injured and the last of her family ferociously slain. She stumbles into Black Hills Wolf territory and collapses. Now under the protection of the pack, she finds herself whisked away to hide out in a cave until her old friend the alpha returns. Potentially the last of her shifter kind, she has nothing left to lose, but her life and a chance to avenge her brother.

After a dangerous rescue, on the edge of pack territory, Seth and Rogue take a woman on the brink of death back to the pack. Her identity and why she was brutalized is a mystery. The pieces soon fit together proving this assault was no coincidence. The Black Hills Wolves pack faces a bigger threat than they could even imagine. The trio soon find themselves on a tumultuous journey of life and death and relentless lust.

What will you do with an extra hour of daylight? #daylightsavingstime #giveaway @jsubject

For those who live in areas that adhere to daylight savings time, tonight we put our clocks ahead one hour. It means getting up an hour earlier, and an extra hour of light at the end of the day. I've noticed the days are already getting longer, and this gives us more time to spend outside without having to worry about the darkness interfering.

With the extra hour, it means I can let the kids play outside after supper, take the dog for a walk without having to worry about wearing reflective clothing. And, I can even relax outside with a book before having to get the kids settled for bed.

So, what do you plan on doing with your extra hour of daylight?

If you're looking for something to read with your extra hour, be sure to enter my Goodreads giveaway for a signed print book of Alien Next Door: The Complete Series, and check out my new release, Made For Her, as well as my 99¢ box set, The Complete Underground Series....
