Las Vegas, Reflections on Virginity, & A New Release @MichelleGAuthor

Howdy, friends! It was touch and go to see if I'd get this posted in time but the internet gods have smiled upon me and restored my connection.

So much to discuss! But where to start?

First, I promised some details about my trip to Vegas. As expected, I had an amazing time! We spend just under a week there and crammed in so much that I couldn't possibly go into it all here. Instead, here's the highlights:

You can't visit Vegas without taking in at least one adult show, and we chose to see Fantasy at the Luxor hotel. The singing and dancing was good, the mostly naked girls, even better. After the show, they signed calendars for those who bought them (us included). I was nervous about being a female in the audience, but I was amazed at how many women and couples were there. We also saw Zumanity from Cirque du Soleil and it also featured mostly naked people, women AND men, but the show was so artistic that it couldn't even compare to Fantasy. If you have the chance, definitely check it out! Hubby and I sat in the love seats in the first row and at one point I had two hot guys wearing only thongs making out beside me. *fans self* WOW!

On the G-rated portion of our trip, we visited the Grand Canyon. Absolutely breathtaking! It was a 4 hour drive through the desert but it was worth it.

I'd never seen a real Joshua Tree before. They're really beautiful in a deserty kind of way.

A wise warning.

But I figure you mostly want to hear about the naughty stuff. ;)  We went to the Erotic Heritage Museum. I found the historical pieces particularly interesting. When you see a stone dildo that's more than a thousand years old, you realize how central sexuality is to the human existence.

This delightful piece of art is made out of pennies.

The museum is right beside a Gentleman's club (which we didn't visit) and an adult store (which we totally visited). This was my purchase!

Oh my.

Part of the exhibit in the museum included information about the physiological side of the reproductive system, as well as about sexual identity and sex and society. And these next two pics provide a nice segue into my latest release.

What is virginity? In a nutshell, it's a social construct which has little to do with whether or not a woman has a hymen. Although in our time the definition of virgin has expanded to include men, in its strictest definition it's about a sexually inexperienced woman. These days, it's hard to define it as only penis-in-vagina intercourse given the varying gender identities and multitude of 'sexualities' out there. I love this quote from the large blue box: "[S]houldn't we think in terms of what was gained - a new experience, intimacy with a partner, pleasure, a better idea of likes and dislikes?" We as a society tend to be so uptight about sex, worrying constantly about perceptions and moral absolutes, that we forget that being sexual creatures is central to the human condition.

Who says three's a crowd?

This is part of the reason why my Losing It series (apart from the first book) doesn't deal strictly with women with no sexual experience. Book one, Losing It In Vegas, involves a woman who's decided to take charge of her sexuality and finally experience the joys of sex. The second book, Losing It All Over Again, is the wish fulfilment of a woman who's prior sexual experiences were unsatisfactory. Losing It In the Closet has no women at all, but rather a young man who wants to experience sex with another man for the first time. And in my most recent release, Losing It Two At A Time, two women who are married to each other want to have a baby and they decide to go the 'old-fashioned' route to conceive, despite the fact that neither one has been with a man before. I wanted my series to focus less on the act of "losing it" and more on gaining those first experiences.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate the cold?

Seriously, there has been many a day when I'm sure I was born in the wrong country. If it wasn't for the fact that I love Canada so much, I probably would have moved by now. But, that doesn't mean that I can't go and visit other places when it gets to chilly around here for me. :)

Mother Nature pulled a fast one on us this year and November has been WAY warmer than normal. It was 20deg (70F) last week which is almost unheard of. But then a cold....really cold wind kicked up and all those pretty numbers are fell into the single digits. Which would have upset me more except that we'd already booked a trip to one of my favourite countries. Jamaica!

Chris and I have hit the 20th anniversary mark this month (22 if you count the two years we lived together.) 

According to the Anniversary website, the traditional gift is china.....something breakable? no thanks. 

The modern gift is platinum...so something I'll probably loose.
But honestly I'm much happier with a stamp in my passport :)

What will you do with an extra hour of daylight? #daylightsavingstime #giveaway @jsubject

For those who live in areas that adhere to daylight savings time, tonight we put our clocks ahead one hour. It means getting up an hour earlier, and an extra hour of light at the end of the day. I've noticed the days are already getting longer, and this gives us more time to spend outside without having to worry about the darkness interfering.

With the extra hour, it means I can let the kids play outside after supper, take the dog for a walk without having to worry about wearing reflective clothing. And, I can even relax outside with a book before having to get the kids settled for bed.

Spring ~ The Birds and the Bees, and No More Stars? Post by author Jessica E. Subject #amreading

Hello everyone! I'm back for my monthly post on Romance Eh? A lot has happened since I was last here. I've finished a story, attended my first conference (It was a blast!), and am getting ready for a few box sets and anthologies to release in the near future. Some will contain already published stories, while others will contain brand new ones. :)

It's also gotten a lot warmer, and the days are lasting longer. I take my dog for a walk almost every morning. In the winter, it was so dark, I had to walk on the side of the street with the street lamps to make sure if she did her business, I could find it to pick it up. Now, I have to wear sunglasses when I take her out at the same time of day. The one think I really miss though, is seeing the stars in the morning. I used to gaze up into the sky, and check out all the constellations visible in my part of the world. I used Google Sky Map to help determine which ones were planets, and occasionally, I even saw the space station zoom past. While I do enjoy the longer days, I also look forward to the fall, when I will be able to see the stars in the morning again. Because, I'm not getting up extra early to see them. Five o'clock mornings are early enough.

In my story, SATIN SHEETS IN SPACE, the heroine also enjoys gazing up at the stars, so much so, she has a tattoo that she has a tattoo of the Milky Way galaxy. Here's an excerpt...

“I noticed the galaxy on your shoulder.”

She sighed with disappointment, having expected him to kiss her. “Yes, I have a tattoo.”

Would a little ink stand in their way? She tried to pull away, to brace for his dismissal, but his hold on her never faltered.

“I like it. Why did you choose the Milky Way?”

Releasing the breath she’d been holding, Danyka smiled with relief. Her cheeks ached from the joy this man brought her. “It’s a tribute to my father. We’d often lie on the back lawn and watch the stars. He taught me about the constellations in our galaxy, and many other celestial bodies throughout the universe.”

A wave of sadness washed over her. She missed those moments, and her father.

Her date brushed his thumb along her cheek, bringing her attention back to him. “And what did he teach you about the possibility of other life—out in space?”

Did she really want to ruin this evening with talk of her belief in aliens? No.

He raised his eyebrows, waiting for an answer.

Oh hell. “He told me not to assume Earth is the only planet in the universe capable of sustaining life.”

“So you believe?”

“In a matter of speaking, yes.” There, she’d said it. Now watch him run. “But I can’t say I’ve ever met anyone from another world.”

His placed gentle kisses across her neck, lighting a fire deep in her core. “I believe, too.”

Even though no distance existed between their bodies, his kiss caught her by surprise. Any self-doubt she held onto melted away, giving room to the need to be with this man. His lips, as soft as when they’d pressed against her knuckles, stole her breath away.

He pulled back, leaving her body tingling. “Perhaps we could go someplace we could have some privacy?”

The idea both scared and thrilled her. She had never been one to do anything without meticulous planning, another reason she’d never had much fun in her life. But the evening had been one big whirlwind up until now. “Let’s go.”

Another trip to the Writer's Retreat!

Greetings from this side of Spring!

Where is it where one can have below freezing temperatures and hot all in the same day? Only in Canada. LOL

We took a recent trip up to my writer's retreat in Northern Ontario and when we got there, the ice was just going out on some of the lakes and ponds but the air was quite warm - so off came the winter coats. Yeah!!

And then came a lovely heat wave for a couple of days which allowed me to hit some hiking trails and snap some colorful Spring shots.

 

 

But just before we left the writer's retreat...guess what? Snow!

Oh well, LOL, winter does have a way of hanging on.

However sunny days are on the way. Squeeeing!

Then I'll be able to start writing outdoors again.

Dreaming of warmer climes, and smokin' hot heroes.

When I first started looking into getting published, a lot of other writers told me that US editors and publishers don't want to read about American settings. They told tales of 'their friend' who had a book set in small town Canada told to rewrite it setting it in...South Carolina/Texas/Florida/name your state. When I was at one of my publishers' dinners at a convention in New Orleans last year, I took the opportunity to ask one of the marketing people if that was true. She nodded and agreed that sometimes they would ask an author to consider changing her story's location.

The thing is, except for I Need You for Christmas which is set in the Haliburton Highlands of central Ontario, I've never really been excited about setting any of my stories locally. I just don't find it...exciting. it's just...here.  Which may explain why my romantic suspense series starts in Arlington Texas, then moves to DC, and why I love writing westerns set in Texas rather than Alberta. Which ends up with me having to bug my friends from south of the border to ask if my character would request a coke, a soda, or a pop, or if pancakes are called pancakes or flapjacks or griddle cakes down there. I think the funniest discovery was learning that while I would have my Texans donning what we would call a toque, Texans would wear a toboggan.

Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE Alberta. And BC. OMG driving through the various mountain ranges from BC to Alberta was one of the best trips I've ever done.  Ontario and Quebec have some spectacular vistas too. From the beauty of Mount Tremblant and the European flavor of Old Quebec City, and all the sparkling lakes of the cottage country of Ontario, the sandy beaches of Sand Banks Provincial Park? They are beautiful.  Yet, when I dream up a story, when a character walks into my head, he rarely lives in the same country.

Lately I've been spending a lot of time writing Texans. Despite the added work, I like writing Texans. I like the romantic idea of it anyway. Mainly I like that their idea of a bad snowstorm is what we'd call a dusting. And how three days later they are taunting me about it being back up into the 60s or 70s. But during January and February, when we're hitting minus thirty degree with the wind chill factored in, and wake up to an extra foot of snow that needs to be shovelled (yes, we spell it with two Ls, not one), it helps to be able to lose myself in my characters' worlds as they curse that damned Texas heat, as one Texan told me she always refers to it.

Then again, I couldn't take the heat they endure all through the summer. Or their nasty brown recluse spiders. Eh, I write fiction--in my world, I can always have my characters be able to retreat to air conditioned vehicles and houses. And have special spider-repelling abilities. Huh, maybe I need to write an anti-Spiderman ;) ...Nah, I think I'll keep writing my hunky firemen and cowboys and let them generate a heat of their own.

By the way, I've got a novella coming out tomorrow -- and yes, it's set in Texas too.

FEEDING THE FLAMES

In the meantime, I'm going to stay inside, curled up by the fireplace with the cat on my lap and the dog at my feet, and dream about one day being able to open the windows to enjoy balmy breezes and bird song. And better yet, to be able to walk across the floor and touch something without the resulting ZAP of static electricity from all this dry heat. Which isn't that far in the distant future at least.  

Oh and yes, the toque in the photograph is my latest knitting project.  It's not blocked yet, but I'm pleased with how it turned out.

As I sit here writing this post (last Friday), it is snowing. It has been snowing all week. And not little amounts that are nice and pretty, but a few inches at a time. In some places, there is over a foot of snow to walk or drive through. My kids haven't been lucky enough to get any snow days, but the children who live in the areas around Stratford have had at least three snow days this week. It's hard to believe I was wishing for snow at Christmas.

There are some things I do like about winter and the snow though...

1. Snow is pretty. (When it's just fallen.)
2. Snow on the ground lights everything up, and makes it less creepy walking the dog in the morning.
3. Cold = no bugs. I do like going outdoors, but I really don't like bugs.
4. You can dress for the snow and cold. Yes, layers work. I always say it's easy to put more clothes on, but in the humidity, one can only take so much off before they're naked and still covered in sweat. (And not in a sexy way.)
5. Winter fun! As a family, we love to go tobogganing, tube sliding, and just playing in the snow. Our dog loves this weather, too, and acts like a big puppy. Makes for interesting walks.

Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying the holiday season. As this is my last post of 2014, I want to wish you all the very best in 2015! Starting in January, I will be blogging here on the 12th of every month, and I am excited about all of the new Canadian romance authors joining us, too. :)

In 2015, I plan to finish many of the stories I've started, some part of a series, and others totally different than anything I've written before. Stay tuned...
