Reading To My Nieces #GirlPower #Equality

I'm blessed with two incredibly, wonderful, little, girls in my life...my nieces, Emily and Natalie.

They come and spend time at our house as often as I can swing it and to be honest, I miss having little ones running around. (My two daughters are fast approaching 20.)

Much like I did with my own kids, I read to them a lot and try to have lots of books around. But, after fifteen years the book selection for toddlers at our house has been replaced by more advanced reading material.

Thus began my hunt to rebuild my home library. I started by asking my girls what their favourite books were and then picked up some of my favourites.

Things have changed so much in the last decade and to be completely honest, the girls are being raised in a very conservative home. So, it's up to their Aunti, Uncle and cousins to ensure that they are exposed to some life lessons on equality, understanding and acceptance.

I was shopping today and ordered a copy of Robert Munsch's Zoom and We Share Everything because I read those books to my girls and I still like the lessons in them. Then I went looking for books about strong women and girls who are amazing role models.

There is a new books called "Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls" which looked amazing, but after shipping and exchange rates, it was going to cost me a mint. So a quick search on the 'Zon and I found it there, but then I discovered another book that fit my needs perfectly!

Canadian Girls Who Rocked the World

Take an adventure with some of Canada`s most interesting and accomplished young women. An inspiring book, Canadian Girls Who Rocked the World tells the stories of Canadian girls who won Olympic medals, discovered dinosaurs, explored their country or shaped its history -- all while still in their teens. For example, when she was just 16 years old, Marilyn Bell stepped into the icy waters of Lake Ontario and became the first person in history to swim across it. Subsequently, she became the youngest person to swim the English Channel and changed the world`s ideas about women`s athletic abilities and endurance. And pop star Avril Lavigne released her first album when she was 17, which skyrocketed to the top of the charts, selling 12 million copies. This revised and expanded edition is packed with yet more tales of adventure and achievement. New profiles include hockey player Cassie Campbell, music exec Denise Donlon and environmental activist and leader of the federal Green Party Elizabeth May. Every day, Canadian girls find new ways to rock the world. This fun book profiles women who have achieved greatness and contains quotes from the girls who aspire to follow in their footsteps.

Not only are these stories about Canadians but they are focused on girls who accomplished amazing things before they were 20! Much easier for little girls to relate to teenagers instead of adults.

While I totally believe in Girl Power...equality is just as important. I was thrilled to discover there was a Canadian Boys Who Rocked the World ready to be added to my car as well.

30 lives that achieved greatness before age 20. No one ever said you had to be a grown-up to do something great. The boys in Canadian Boys Who Rocked the World have proved this to the world. Breaking world records, winning hearts in the limelight, changing the face of the scientific world - these boys have shaken the planet with their achievements. At 17, Louis Cyr bested the reigning Canadian strongman by lifting a 180 kg granite boulder. Wayne Gretzky was breaking NHL records by the time he was 18. Oscar Peterson won his first radio contest for piano at 14 and was awarded his own 15-minute weekly radio show. Every day, Canadian boys find new ways to rock the world. This fascinating book profiles young men who are born to greatness as well as young boys who aspire to it.

I can't wait the next time the girls come to visit and we can get reading!
If you have any suggestions for amazing books geared for elementary ages then please put them in the comments!!

It's Spring! It really is! I have pictures to help. ~ Jessica E. Subject @jsubject #Canada #waterfalls

As I write this post for my scheduled day, there is still the occasional bit of snow on the ground, and snowfall forecast for this afternoon. And the temperatures definitely remind me of winter. But, it is Spring. It really is. So, I must remind myself that this is only temporary, and that the nice weather is on its way. This weekend, according to the seven day forecast. If you need help believing that Spring has come to this part of the world, I've decided to post some pictures from various waterfalls I've visited in Ontario.

Now, the most famous waterfalls in Ontario is Niagara Falls. But, there are some other beauties you might want to check out...

Duchesney Falls in North Bay

Inglis Falls in Owen Sound

Indian Falls in Owen Sound

Okay, so there are several others, but these are the ones that I have visited more than once, and have my own personal pictures of them. In Owen Sound, there is a waterfall tour you can take, to visit multiple falls. I did that when I was pregnant. LOL

So, here's to Spring finally arriving, so we can get out to hike the falls, go for bike rides, and just go outside without having to bundle up.

Christmas ~ Canadian Style with author Jessica E. Subject #Canada

My Christmas alien romance, Hey, Santa, takes place at Christmas, and to me that not only means time with family, it also means snow. Living in Canada, we get snow in the fall, throughout the winter, and into the spring. Sometimes even in the summer. Although we don't have any that has stayed yet this season, it is rare for us not to have snow at Christmas. Now, every part of Canada is different in terms of the weather they get. The Maritimes seem to get the most snow, whereas the prairie provinces get really cold temperatures but not as much snow.

This weather can lead to some facts of life and memories. Here are some of mine:

  • My grandparents live six hours north from us. In the winter, we rarely visited them. It was just a part of growing up, and it is still the same to this day.
  • Just before Christmas, I was visiting my other grandparents, and my father came to pick me up from their place to bring me home for the holidays. Well, when he left, the weather was fine, but on the way home, the weather was so bad, that we had to stop in London and take the train the rest of the way home.
  • In the snow, kids usually make snowmen, well, not my family. Instead, my mother helped my brother and I to make snowhorses, and we rode them until they melted.
  • One winter, we went tobogganing in a nearby town. There was a giant hill that flattened out at the bottom, and then there was a river further out. Most people never made it to the river when sledding down the hill. Well, my brother went on the toboggan with one of my cousins. We all thought they were going to stop before the river, but they didn’t. Both of them fell right in. As a child, I had never seen adults move so fast. They had the two boys out of the water, back up the hill, and stripped to nothing within seconds. Thank goodness they were both okay.
  • Thirteen years ago, when my husband and I were living in the country, I was driving to work, and I slipped on a patch of black ice. Now, on my right was a ditch, and on my left was a snowy field, hydro poles lining that side of the road. The truck slipped to the left. Thankfully, there was no traffic, and I slid into the field in between the poles. No damage was done to the truck, but the follwing summer, you could see where I went into the field by the lack of corn growing. Little did I know that at the time, I was just pregnant with my first child.
Do you get snow where you live? If so, what are some of your childhood memories of snow?

Hey, Santa

An Alien for the Holidays story

Enjoy an excerpt:
Claire smoothed her dress across her lap. The short hemline didn’t come close to reaching her knees, or barely her butt for that matter. Though a festive red color, the dress’s plunging neckline revealed even more skin. She shivered in her chair, ready to ask for her coat back. Why did she have to buy the shortest dress possible?

Like she needed it anyway, with her date already ten minutes late. She doubted he would show. Who wanted a socially inept woman? Heck, what man wanted to start dating someone two days before Christmas? She sighed, resting an elbow on the table. Why did I ask out Santa? She didn’t even know his name, what he looked like. Yet, she’d given him enough personal information to stalk her. Way to go, numbskull. She might as well have given him her house key. And since Tiffany had driven her to the restaurant, she’d have to take a cab back home.

“Hi, Claire. Sorry, I’m late.”

She jerked her head toward the deep, husky voice. Her Santa had arrived. But instead of the white-haired, bearded man with the fuzzy red suit, she stared at a Greek god. Broad shoulders. Muscles constricted by the sleeves of his dress shirt. His wavy brown hair looked wet, as if he’d recently stepped out of the shower. Or maybe snow had started to fall since she’d arrived. Pulse racing, she dared to gaze into his crystal blue eyes, the part of him she remembered from their meeting in the mall. Yet, even with his tanned complexion, something seemed not quite right with the color of his skin.

Was he as nervous as her? Her last non-double date occurred so long ago, she didn’t know how to act.

Not wanting to be rude, she stood to greet him. He had, after all, arrived rather than standing her up. And the sooner he touched her, the better.

Resting his hand on her hip, he moved closer, kissing her cheek, his lips soft and gentle. His breath smelled of fresh mint, a far cry from the last guy Tiffany had tried to set her up with.

Thankful for my home and native land

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians across the country! After travelling six hours on Friday to visit with family for the weekend, and then making the return trip on Sunday, I am thankful for many things. I am thankful to still have my grandmother and her husband still alive. I am thankful for the ability to visit them. I am extremely thankful to live in such a beautiful country. And I've decided to share some pictures with you. Enjoy!

Duchesnay Falls (right side) in North Bay, Ontario
In the spring, both sides have much more water flowing.

Upper falls at Duchesnay Falls.
We went hiking up beyond the steel walking bridge to find these falls.

Not taken over Thanksgiving weekend, but a wonderful site.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving!

That plan is blown when she discovers an abandoned carriage deep in the woods. Inside is a man, Jerrod Ross, who fuels all of her wicked Regency dreams and fantasies. Take him home? Sure, why not?
Jerrod Ross has been ripped from the only world he has ever known—1821 Cornwall, England. A mine owner with many responsibilities, all he wants to do is return to his time. But his growing attraction for the lovely lady who found him makes staying in the future a temptation he finds hard to resist.
Torn between duty and desire, past and future, the hardest thing Sandra and Jerrod will do is admit their feelings. Or say—goodbye.

Previously published. Re-edited, revised, and more than 7500 words added.

Canadian Time Travel!
Excerpt: Sandra winked then picked up the shave cream and dispensed some into her hands, mixed it between her palms, and spread a thin film over his face. In response, he spread his legs wide, allowing her to step in closer. Good God, he was hard as stone. All this talk of shaving, the touching, her nearness. Jerrod gazed up at her, his heart thumping madly in his chest.
Though she appeared somewhat nervous, he definitely could see desire swimming in her lovely eyes. How satisfying. Picking up the Fusion, Sandra flicked the button and a low hum filled the silence surrounding them. When her breasts slightly brushed by his cheek, he couldn’t stop the low growl from rumbling deep in his chest. Using one finger, he swiped away the bit of shave cream from her sweater, right on the nipple. Barely there contact, but enough to have the simmering flame between them roar to life.
He slid across the seat so his thighs touched her leg, reached behind her back, and eased her down until she sat on his leg. “Shave me,” he whispered hoarsely. Sandra held the razor to the base of his throat and began a slow ascent to his chin. She twisted, turning toward the sink, and ran the razor under warm water before turning back to him. Giving him a soft, sultry smile, she scraped him again.
Her free hand followed the ascent of the blade, gently caressing his shaved cheek. God, he was tempted to kiss her right then, instead he leaned back and let her tender strokes lull him into relaxation. Closing his eyes, he came to the realization he could become used to this very easily. Some minutes passed and Sandra continued with her task. In his time, he usually shaved himself since he was not keen to have a valet fussing around him. However, having her sitting in his lap perilously close to his throbbing erection, with her warm, sultry breath surrounding him, appealed to him greatly.
“Kiss me,” he commanded, keeping his voice low and quiet. Setting the razor on the counter, she patted his face dry with a cloth, then leaned in and laid her lips against his. A jolt of heat rolled through him. Tilting his head, Jerrod delved deeper, cupping her cheeks to hold her still while he tasted her. Sweet and hot, like a dish of honey warmed over the flame. He swiped his tongue along her plump lower lip and she opened in invitation. The kiss grew fierce, both of them hungrily exploring. Sandra met the thrusts of his tongue with insistent plunges of her own. Passionate. Intoxicating. Yes. This was a kiss worth traveling through time for.

Greetings from this side of Spring!

Where is it where one can have below freezing temperatures and hot all in the same day? Only in Canada. LOL

We took a recent trip up to my writer's retreat in Northern Ontario and when we got there, the ice was just going out on some of the lakes and ponds but the air was quite warm - so off came the winter coats. Yeah!!

PARLOR GAMES Tales of Perdition 4
By Bonnie Edwards

Welcome to Canadian romance author, Bonnie Edwards! So glad she stopped by to spotlight her latest release, PARLOR GAMES (of course, in Canada, it would be PARLOUR GAMES) *snicker* Read below for all the hot details!

BLURB:

Welcome to Perdition House: a house of sin, secrets and seduction.

Matt Crewe has only one desire when he arrives at Perdition House: to sell himself in a sexy bachelor auction for charity. Matt needs to get the truth behind the web of lies that surround the mysterious mansion.

Carrie MacLean needs a career-making break and buying the services of a bachelor for so-called charity will give her all she needs to move into hard hitting journalism.

What neither of them knows is that Perdition House is a haunted bordello and they are already mesmerized by the spirits of the women who once lived and worked there.

They each need to expose the mansion’s secrets but once they make a connection, nothing, not even their own secrets can come between them.

Both Matt and Carrie are cool and competent professionals, intent on getting what they came for…

In a last ditch effort to save their sanity, their lives and their hearts, the truth is revealed and they accept that love found in Perdition is eternal…

EXCERPT:

“Matt Crewe,” he said, “very pleased to meet you.”
“Carrie MacLean,” she said with a nod and smile. “Sorry about the talent comment, it was rude. I’m not sure what came over me, but as soon as I walked through the gates. . . .” She looked back at them, but the entrance to the driveway was obscured by pine boughs.
“Cold?” he asked.
She released her arms. She unzipped her fleece to mid-chest, then loosened her collar the way he had. “No, I was freezing a moment ago, but now I’m hot as can be.”
“You can say that again,” he muttered as he bent to pick up her overnight bag. “I’ll carry this for you,” he offered.
“Thanks!”
The cabs spread ahead and behind them as people arrived at an orderly pace. She watched every car that went past with interest. “Do you see the optical illusion?”
“You mean the boughs swaying away from the noses of the cars?”
“Yes. It’s odd. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it.”
He shrugged. “Like you said, it’s just an illusion.” But his sexual arousal was real as real could get.
She glanced up at him, her eyes catching reflected light as it bounced off the tree limbs. “Yes, an illusion. Have you been here before Matt?”
“No, this is my first time.”
“Me, too.”
“Virgins, then.”
She chuckled. “In a manner of speaking.” There was just enough room at the side of the driveway for them to walk side by side. They took it.
He wanted to understand the colors at play in her hair, see the smoothness of her cheeks, how straight her teeth were, the level of intelligence in her gaze, but the on-again, off-again lighting only allowed for glimpses.
No matter, he’d see her soon enough. See her and know her in ways he could barely fathom. He wasn’t prone to fanciful thoughts, but he did know gut reaction and his gut screamed for full speed ahead with her.
Lights from the house appeared between the trees ahead and they rounded one more bend. The driveway curved directly in front of a three-story Victorian mansion aglow with welcome. She caught her breath at the sight, and he wondered what she’d sound like in the throes of passion. He was determined to find out.
“Perdition House,” she said. “A weekend of rest and relaxation awaits us both.”
“You could call it that.” He called it a sex club, pure and simple. But if she wanted to keep to her own illusions she was welcome to them. “This is where we part company Carrie MacLean. The hired help is expected to enter through a side entrance.”
“See you later?”
“Yes, you will.”
She put her hand on his sleeve and looked up at him. He felt a punch of desire to his gut he fully accepted. “I’m already looking forward to it,” she said. She licked her lips, and the power of the simple gesture undid him.

He headed across the drive before he dragged her into the well-tended rose bushes.

No more winter! Travel to a Space Station or Another Planet for March Break

Foreverary is finally over! March is here with warmer temperatures. Yay! The snowbanks are slowly melting away, driveways are becoming visible, and the streets are going back to their normal width. Everything looks dirty from all of the sand and gravel used to makes the roads less slippery, but this won't last. The trees have already started to bud. Soon, crocuses and tulips will be bursting through the ground to bring us the first colours of spring. Robins will return, and the rain will make everything look fresh and new again. I can't wait!

Copyright: / 123RF Stock Photo
But, until then, some Canadians are travelling south for March Break, which is next week. While my family has no plans to go anywhere, I know some families going down to Florida, hoping to catch an early burst of summer before returning to our much cooler temperatures.

If you're like me, and are staying home for March Break, there are other ways to get away at least for a short period of time. You can watch a movie, read a book, or listen to an audio book.

It's also time for spring cleaning, right? I like to put my earplugs in, and listen to an audio book while tidying up, doing the dishes, and other chores.

With the audio books I have out, you can visit a space station, or travel to another planet. Why not take a listen and find out if you'd like to visit one of my worlds?

You can listen to samples from my other audio books on SoundCloud. And if you'd like to WIN one of my audio book titles, you can pop on over to my blog and enter there.

My audio book titles are available from Audible, Amazon, and iTunes.

Until next month!
