The pets are leaving Earth for Space @jsubject #newrelease #PetsinSpace

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! While the leaves are late to change colour in Southwestern Ontario, they have started already, and I enjoy crunching them under my feet every time I'm out walking.

But, today's post isn't about the colours of fall. It's about PETS. Now, on Earth we are used to pets like dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, fish, and even more exotic reptiles. But just like we don't know what life is like on other planets, we also don't know what their pets would be like. So, those of us who write fiction that is set in space get to create our own. In the newly released Sci-Fi Romance anthology, EMBRACE THE ROMANCE: Pets in Space 2, you will find some of the pets you already know, and many new ones straight from the imagination of the authors involved.

The pet I've included in my anthology story is a tibbar, which is similar to a baby rabbit, but with hamster-like claws and ears. Plus, they have the intelligence of a cat, which means they can and do get into all kinds of trouble. I’ve had all three of those types of pets at some point in my life, but never all at the same time. It was fun to combine their physical characteristics and personalities into one pet for the purpose of this story.

Here's an excerpt from GIB AND THE TIBBAR, my Galactic Defenders story that is included in the new Pets in Space anthology, EMBRACE THE ROMANCE...

A small, furry white creature scampered between the Defenders and the fire. Gib yanked his feet back and gasped. He tried to follow the path the animal took, and when it disappeared into the grassy field, he relaxed a little. Not that he was afraid, only startled by the sudden appearance of the critter.

But his watch partner reacted differently. The cowardly Defender stood on his bench, reaching for a low branch on the ropral tree as if to lift himself farther off the ground. “What in Gaspra was that? No one told me about any deadly creatures on this planet.”

Gib laughed and slapped his hand on his lap. “I wouldn’t call the fluffy little thing that raced by us a deadly creature.”

“Okay, Hemera is infested with vermin, then.” Zair examined the area around him before he dared put a foot on the ground.

A high-pitched squeak sounded, and Gib’s surveillance partner returned to reaching for the branches. The little creature stood on its hind legs below Zair’s bench, peeping as if telling him off.

Gib couldn’t hold in his laughter. Not just at the other Defender’s reaction, but also the thoughts running through Zair’s mind, thoughts he’d failed to block in his fear.

“It’s not going to eat you.” Gib shook his head, wondering how his squad mate could see the creature as dangerous. “Would you please get down from there? Defenders are supposed to be brave and fierce. Right now, you’re neither.”

“Go to Gaspra, Mingot. And stay out of my head.” He yanked his plazer from his hip holster and aimed it at the critter. “If I don’t destroy it, it will bring death to everyone on this planet.”

Stepping into the line of fire, Gib yanked the weapon from his squad mate, thankful the safety remained on. “You’re being ridiculous. Besides, if you fire your weapon, you’ll cause a panic. The Hemera will think Erebus have arrived.”

The frightened Defender shook a foot at the creature. “Fine, then. Kick it into the fire. Or you could stomp on it.”

“Don’t you dare!” A Hemera woman burst from the bushes, storming toward Zair like a mother rehn protecting her young. She shoved him off his bench and shouldered past Gib before scooping the noisy creature into her hand. “This is my tibbar, not some kind of vermin.”

“Tibbar? Try nasty rodent that tried to eat me.” Zair smoothed out his uniform but kept his distance from the creature now perched on the woman’s shoulder.

“You’re both on nehbred.” She kicked dirt at them, her pink lips pursed and her dark eyes set in a deadly stare. “You don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to my pet or my planet.”

Getting my geek on - Why I write Sci-fi @SusanHayes

Hello. My name is Susan Hayes and I’m a geek.

I grew up watching Star Trek and devouring books by authors like Andre Norton, Piers Anthony, and Anne McCafferty. I dressed up as Princess Leah the year that Star Wars hit the theatres, and I’ve been playing Dungeons and Dragons since my university days. And if you’re wondering, the answer is yes, I got beaten up at school a lot, and no, I didn’t date much. Geek cred: I have it in spades.

It’s hardly surprising that given my love for sci-fi/fantasy and all things paranormal, I have written more than twenty-six books in those genres. While I treasure my contemporary stories, I’ve discovered that my muse and I prefer to write in worlds I built myself. From futuristic dystopias to worlds where magical beings like vampires and shapeshifters living among us; these are the stories I love best.

There’s something compelling about being able to create your own world and using it as a mirror to reflect the world we live in. From the darkest traits to the greatest triumphs, I can choose what elements to include and what to leave out of my worlds, and mold the lives and backgrounds of the characters that reside within those realms.

***Having re-read that statement, I’ve realized that at least part of my love of world building apparently comes from some innate desire to be an all-powerful goddess.  Good to know.***

Currently, most of my stories seem to be science-fiction romances. I have my Drift series, populated by alien races as well as human created cyborgs.  My characters are trying to survive in a future that’s less like the ever hopeful and optimistic Star Trek and more like the grim, cyberpunk worlds of Blade Runner and Fifth Element. My heroines are strong because they have to be, and my heroes might be white knights, but their armor is often dented and in need of repair.

September 22nd, I’ll be releasing the first of a series of novellas that are a different flavour of sci-fi. Instead of gritty cyberpunk, my Star-Crossed Alien Mail Order Bride series is full of light hearted moments inspired by the classic “Mars needs Women” movies, along with a sprinkling of Earth Girls are Easy. I’m having a blast writing these stories and creating the world that my three heroes inhabit. Joran, Vadir, and Kash might all be from the same planet, but the only things they have in common are their good looks and a their absolute certainty that they’re not destined to fall in love.

And if you can't wait until September 22nd to dive into some out of this world romance...check out the Loving the Alien collection: available for 99 cents for a limited time.

Greetings from the West Coast by @SHayesRomance

Hi!

I’m Susan Hayes, and I’m one of the new authors invited to join the Romance Eh, blog this year. I’ve lived my whole life on B.C.’s west coast, and most of that time I’ve called Victoria my home. Yes, I’m an islander, born and raised. We’re a unique breed, considered a little quirky even by west coast standards. Part of that uniqueness comes from the fact we live in one of the only parts of this vast country that doesn’t experience a true Canadian winter.

Snowfall warnings here are likely to incite citywide panic, and at the first sight of actual flurries, the city shuts its collective doors and flees for the safety of our homes. That’s what’s going on today, as I write this blog. There’s a chance of flurries in the forecast, and as a result, the city has gone quiet. Everyone is staring up at the clouds, waiting for the first dreaded flake to appear.

This was the view from my parent’s window on Christmas Day. Technically, it was a white Christmas by Victoria standards. (If you look closely, there are a few patches of white in all that green…really!)

Christmas quail - No, we didn't show them what we did to the turkey...

While everyone else in town was preparing for snow, I’ve been putting the finishing touches on my new book, Wild Card, Book #3 in my sci-fi romance series, The Drift. *cue trumpets and dancers cavorting in celebration.* I write across a few genres, including contemporary and fantasy, but deep down I know my favourites are science fiction and paranormal romances. Just, don’t tell the other genres, I don’t want to hurt their feelings!

According my dad, it’s all my mom’s fault that I am a geek. She had me watching the original Star Trek before my eyes could even focus properly, and the year Star Wars came out, the only Halloween costume I wanted was Princess Leia. I grew up watching and reading everything I could about alternative worlds and possible futures where magic was real, and a princess could still be a badass with a laser gun. These days, I get to tell my own stories, and one of the many things I’ve carried with me is a love of strong heroines. Women from all walks of life who aren’t afraid to do what needs to be done instead of waiting for the hero (or in some cases, heroes) to save them.

If you’d like to check out one of my heroines: Double Down,  Book one of the Drift Series is free right now:

See you next month, and until then, stay warm, be happy, and take time to read!

Happy reading,

Susan

Susan lives on Vancouver Island, off the Canadian west coast where the waters are patrolled by orcas and the sighting of snowflakes leads to citywide panic. She’s jumped out of perfectly good airplanes on purpose and accidently swum with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef.

If the world ends, she plans to survive as the spunky, comedic sidekick to the heroes of the new world, because she’s too short and out of shape to make it on her own for long.

Autumn, the season of changes with author Jessica E. Subject @jsubject #sfr #romance

The official first day of Autumn is not until September 22, though many consider summer to be over after the Labour Day Weekend. The kids go back to school, and routines change. Yesterday was the first day that temperatures seemed to be cooler, more seasonal. And I'm not sure about where you live, but the leaves have been turning here, and falling for about three weeks now. Plus, my dog is shedding up a storm.

But, the changes are also coming in my writing as well. Later this month I will release BEYOND REACH. This story was originally published with Decadent Publishing as An Unexpected Return. To fit the line I'd submitted it for, I had to make some changes from the original story I wrote. Since I received the rights back, I've changed it back to the darker story it was, and expanded the story to give it a much harder, but much more satisfying happily ever after.

While I am finishing getting that story ready for publication, I have started a new story. It is, in a way, a genre I have never written before. It is still a romance, but it takes place during a zombie apocalypse. Zombies are new for me, but I could not get this story out of my head. When this story is finished, I will write JAGER, the next book in my Galactic Defenders series.

So, that's what's I'm up to for the next month. Well, that and a bunch of promos for my books. Here's a list of what's coming up...

September 19-23 - Sci-Fi Romance Promo FREE & 99¢ titles
September 29-30 - SPRT FREE Romance Promo & Giveaway
October 1-2 - FREE Sci-Fi & Fantasy Promo (Patty Jansen)
October 12-31 - NOR Hallowpalooza
And many more after these...

If you would like to know what books are involved in these promos, be sure to subscribe to my newsletter, or follow my blog so you don't miss any of it.

Romancing the Capital ~ Romance is alive in Canada #RTC2016 #books @jsubject

Hello everyone! This past week I returned from Romancing the Capital, a reader/author conference held in Kanata, Ontario (near Ottawa), and hosted by the wonderful Eve Langlais. This was my second year in attendance, and just as much fun as the first.

\

During the conference, I hung out with many of my fellow authors from this blog, including Kacey Hammell, Kali Willows, Layna Pimentel, Deborah Cooke / Claire Delacroix, Kayleigh Malcolm, and Tricia Daniels.I also had the opportunity to chat with fellow sci-fi romance authors Susan Hayes and Donna McDonald, and was on the sci-fi romance panel with Susan, Eve Langlais, S.E. Smith, and Viola Grace. Kali and Kacey hosted another fabulous speed dating with authors event, after which I had a very sore throat. But, it was worth it to chat with so many readers. Kacey, Layna, and I also hosted a snack on the Friday afternoon and had the opportunity to meet even more readers. I was involved in and attended a few other events, which were so much fun, especially the 80s-inspired dinner after the book signing, where I braved getting up on the dance floor. I just couldn't sit still, especially when The Safety Dance started playing.

Overall, it was a fabulous event, and I look forward to attending again in the future. There were many authors and readers I wish I had the chance to chat with more, and I plan to seek them out at future events. Here are some pictures from Romancing the Capital...
