Business Trips, Homesickness and Pink Carnations (@TDanielsAuthor)

Last month I promised you the first installment of how my Bound4Ireland series came to light. Something happened during my recent journey and it’s something that I’m feeling very compelled to share with you. Ten days ago, I received a call from my corporate office requesting that I fly to one of our US distribution sites to assist with an operational crisis. The next morning I was on a plane. Needless to say, the following ten days were exhausting and extremely busy. Even though the team that I was working with was wonderful, friendly people, I missed my family and was eager to get home. Finally, after ten days I got the approval to come home and continue to support from here. I packed up my bags and made my way to the airport. Now, as my friend Angie will tell you, I’m travel jinxed. She knows, she’s traveled with me A LOT. Nothing ever goes smoothly for me. Just stick with me for a little bit longer, and my point will be clear. I promise.

After working fourteen to sixteen hour days for ten days straight I was so wound up about going home I barely slept. I decided, since I couldn’t sleep anyways, I would gather up my stuff and head to the airport early. I’m no stranger to flying, but I still experience a fair amount of anxiety, finding TSA and Customs extremely intimidating. Knowing that I only had thirty minutes in between connecting flights when I got to Detroit was stressing me out. I checked in my luggage and with my laptop in hand, I maneuvered through the terminal trying to find my way to the gate. It always amazes me the number of people that make their way through the airport. All of them seemingly know where to go and what to do. I struggle as I walk, watching for signs and directions to my boarding gate. Impatient people, walking briskly, catch up to me. Closing the gap, they invade my personal space. I feel them behind me, waiting for the opportunity to get past and it makes me more anxious. Families with small children walk slowly in clusters, slowing down my progress. Then there’s the wanderer. Those that go against the normal flow of foot traffic, distracted or unaware of others around them. Or maybe they just don’t care. To my earlier point, everybody is so caught up in their own journey, that they really don’t see what’s going on around them.

By nothing short of a miracle I finally find my way to my gate almost two hours before my boarding time; it’s the perfect opportunity to get in a little writing. In every row of seating, people sit with their bags on the seats beside them, guaranteeing themselves personal space. I take a seat at the end of the row, frustrated at the young man wearing headphones who refused to acknowledge me. As if he didn’t see me say ‘excuse me’, he stretched his legs out across the aisle so that I couldn’t pass to get a seat near the power outlets. Across from me, a group of women travelling together discusses their trip and laugh out loud at the selfies they’re posting every few moments on Facebook. In the row behind me, a businessman waits for the same flight. His phone rings every two minutes and he takes his calls, conducting his business loudly, not concerned if he may be annoying the people around him. I shake my head and glance down at the cell phone in my hand that I’ve been clutching tightly so that I wouldn’t miss a call from Mr. Daniels.

When the inconsiderate young man with the expensive headphones leaves to board his flight, I quickly gather my stuff and move over to the seats close to the power outlets. The odd incline of the seat and the slippery, vinyl covering make me plop down and slide backwards awkwardly. It makes me chuckle and I turn to the elder woman sitting beside me who looks in my direction. I begin to speak to her, about to share with her a humorous thought but she turns away and stares straight ahead with a stoic look.

As a plane arrives, the gate doors open, and the immediate area becomes chaotic as people rush to catch their connecting flights. They bump into others and rush through the concourse without an ‘excuse me’ or an apology. I try to get a few words written, trying to ignore my disappointment with the behavior of those around me. Then I hear it over the hollow airport speakers. The announcement that, due to mechanical reasons, our flight will be delayed an hour. I look around at all the waiting passengers as they erupt into an angry mob. People rush to the desk, trying to get more information and rebook their connecting flights. An employee of the airline walks around handing out cards with the airlines booking number on it, suggesting that we try to call in and make new arrangements.
My heart sinks when I’m told that the only connecting flight I can take would be through Atlanta and it would get me into Toronto around ten p.m. Seven hours later than planned. I’m really missing Mr. Daniels, right now. He seems to know how to settle me and I just want to get home to him. The elderly woman beside me is trying to get through on the phone but she’s on hold, due to the high volume of calls. I offer her my phone to speak with the agent I have on the line but she waves me off.

I shrug, there’s not much else I can do. I try to go back to my writing but the stress has caused a throbbing pain in my neck. My thoughts are continually interrupted by the loud protests of irate travelers whose plans have been disrupted. Intense businessmen make call after call, cancelling meetings and loudly voicing their opinion of the airlines. I glance up at the airline employee at the desk. I feel bad for her. She’s taking the brunt of the angry backlash. I understand why everyone is upset; it’s an inconvenience for sure. When did our society become one where it’s okay to treat someone with such a lack of respect and unkindness? Service industry or not, she didn’t cause the mechanical failure and is trying her best to make sure everyone gets home as soon as possible. Still, they rant, rave, and make demands. Are you getting a good picture of the environment at the moment?

I’m not going to get any writing done. Frustrated I shut down the laptop with the intentions of putting
it away. As I lower the screen a small girl with blond hair and blue eyes, is standing in front of me. My anxiety lessens at the sight of her wide grin as she holds up a pink carnation and passes it to me. Obviously a little shy, she only nods her head when I ask her if the flower is for me. The tightness in my shoulders disappears as I take it out of her hands and inhale its beautiful fragrance. Looking down at her innocent, sparkling blue eyes, I return her smile. How could I not? I look up at her young mother who’s watching protectively from a few feet away. She smiles, sweetly, and holds up a shopping bag as she explains that it’s the little girls fourth birthday. When she asked her what she would like to do to celebrate her special day, she said that she would like to give everyone on the plane a flower. Feeling like this was a behavior that she wanted to encourage, she immediately purchased several dozen flowers to bring with them.

Maybe it’s the hormones, or maybe it’s the exhaustion, but tears well up in my eyes as the small girl continues up the row of seating. Even the men, receive her humble gift. A few of them say no thank you, telling her that she can give it to someone else instead, but she refuses to take no as an answer. When I look around the seating area, everyone is holding a single pink carnation and smiling. Voices at the airline counter become less intense, and I hear several expressions of gratitude for the agent’s assistance. Waiting passengers look up from their phones and listen as her mom explains her actions, and then they begin to talk…. TO EACH OTHER!

The uptight, businessman paces with his phone to his ear and stops in his tracks when she bravely steps in front of him and holds up a flower. I feel nervous for her when he stops, looking down at her annoyed. I think I even held my breath for a moment, not too sure how this was going to go over. He ended his call and looked over at her mom as she once again explains. Then he shocks me. Crouching down, he gets to her eye level and begins to talk to her. Quickly realizing that she’s really shy, he changes gears and begins to ask her questions that she can answer by nodding her head. After getting permission from her mom to take a picture of her to post on Facebook he reaches into his wallet. Mom protests, of course, because this isn’t the reason for what she’s doing, but he insists. Tucking a few folded bills into her tiny hands, he instructs the four year old to take her mommy out for lunch. She nods and he smiles, and then his eyes well up with tears. He pats her on the top of the head as he gets to his feet, explaining to her mother that he’s been travelling for business for several weeks and that he’s been trying to get home to see his granddaughter. There isn’t a dry eye in the place when he expresses how much he misses her, and thanks the wee girl standing in front of him for making his day.

Everyone tries to discreetly wipe away their tears, feeling somewhat embarrassed. It’s a shame, really. On my way to the restroom, I follow them as they leave the concourse. I wonder if she’ll remember this day and know just how powerful her actions were. Her unspoken message was a, much needed, reminder of the importance of compassion. I watch, feeling truly thankful for my delayed flight, as this amazing four-year-old girl takes a hold of her mother’s hand and looks up at her with a loving look. Then in the most angelic voice I’ve ever encountered she begins to sing… “Skip To My Lou” as they disappear into the crowd of people.

As I looked around at the sea of pink carnations being carried through the airport by complete strangers, I feel a twinkle of hope for our society. It IS possible to unplug, unhook and be kind to each other. A simple smile can make a difference in someone’s day. Today it took the innocent, unselfish act of a four-year-old child to remind me of how important it is, to not only see the flowers, but to stop and smell them and share them with others. Even when they don’t seem receptive to them at first. Random acts of kindness, is on my agenda. My heart is renewed today and I hope to pay that gift forward. As you head into your new week, find a reason to smile. Please… share it with others. I know for certain that someone, somewhere, really needs to see it.

A Little Bit About Canadian Romance Author Tricia Daniels

Hi! Have we met? I’ve been MIA for a little while so I thought that it would be a great opportunity to re-introduce myself. I’m Tricia Daniels and I live in a small town in Southern Ontario, Canada, called Orangeville. It was a great place to raise my three kids, especially as a single parent. Creativity and imagination was something there is never a short supply of in my home. My kids come by their talents honestly. My goal is simple, tell my story, warm a few hearts, shed a few tears, share a silent chuckle, and occasionally, make people blush.

That’s the official version. But the simple truth is... I’m just a normal woman, struggling to pay the bills and trying to raise my kids in a home where they feel empowered, supported and loved. Sounds easy, right? Not so much for a woman who left an extremely violent relationship with three small children in the middle of the night. Things were not all puppies and rainbows. My kids didn’t have an easy life for several years. Kids shouldn’t have to worry about anything except being kids. If you meet me, you’d probably never know that, to this day, I still suffer from post-traumatic stress. After keeping myself guarded for several years, I’ve met a wonderful man who understands my anxiety and my triggers. For the first time in my life, I feel safe and I feel loved.

I have a diploma in Industrial maintenance and several business certificates and yet, I can’t make a box of instant mashed potatoes without completely messing them up. My children refer to the smoke detector as the dinner bell. Sighs. Every girl needs to have a skill and mine apparently is not cooking. Iol I currently have a very demanding corporate career that keeps me challenged and engaged. I think my boss keeps me so busy because he’s terrified of what I may be capable of if I’m bored. He’s a smart man. I often remind him how difficult it is to be both beautiful and brilliant. Sometimes you just get beautiful. J

Here’s something else you should know…I’m not an author. My friends laugh when I say that. I didn’t enjoy reading as a child and English was not my strongest subject. As a matter of fact, grammar and punctuation despise me. Still do. (Insert gratitude for Barren Acres Editing here) Between my quick wit and wicked sense of humor, I found that I have a passion for writing steamy romance stories. I would have never considered publishing my story, until a very close friend convinced me that this was a story that needed to be shared for others to enjoy. So somewhere along the line, I pushed the publish button. Since then I figured out that I need editors, and beta readers, blog reviews and readers. It’s just like me to work ass backwards, but I’m figuring it out.

In a nutshell, I have never aspired to write the next great love story or take the literary world by storm. Love inspires me to continue writing. I’m addicted to the way we connect with fictional characters, feeling their emotions, their angst... when you’re body gets all warm and squeezy at the good parts. I love when the characters take over the story and plot twists develop that I hadn’t planned. I love the journey to the HEA, even though that road has a lot of bends in it sometimes. I love how two imperfect characters can love each other perfectly. My reward, my inspiration is experiencing through them, a love so deep, that I feel it in my own heart.

Over my next few blog posts, I’m going to introduce you to my story, Intractable Souls, the first book in the Bound4Ireland series and how it came to be written as well as all the secrets behind the scenes. I hope you’ll check back in and join me for that journey. You can download my Bound4Ireland series or read a sample on most of the eBook channels.

Until next time… Live your life so it’s a story worth telling.

Author Jessica E. Subject wants to share a secret with you @jsubject #books #romance #giveaway

I have a secret to tell you...

It's not a juicy secret, but not one that many people know, especially my readers. But, I want to share it with you. Okay, here it goes... My new release, BRYCE, is set in London, Ontario, Canada. The story does leave Earth, but the first scene is set in a London residential neighborhood, a city very close to where I live. And, you're the first to know the next story in the series, JAGER, will return to London for part of the adventure.

Here's an excerpt from the beginning of the story, when they're in London:

Bryce raised his crossbow, lining his sights on the creature standing amongst the bushes, its branch-like tentacles undulating in the gentle breeze. Focusing the crosshairs on the alien’s torso, he drew in a deep breath. He had one shot. If he missed, the Erebus would cry out and alert the natives of Terra to its existence, resulting in more casualties. At first glance, no one on the planet, also called Earth, would believe an Erebus anything more than an overgrown bush, but Bryce knew the truth. He’d trained to hunt the creatures from childhood.

Each step carefully placed, he advanced until he stood twenty feet from the Erebus, no chance to miss the shot. With a slight movement of his finger, he squeezed the trigger, sending a zuranium-tipped arrow racing toward the alien.

“Quinn, would you grab me another garbage bag?”

Fornax. The creature lunged toward the female voice, Bryce’s arrow stuck in one of its tentacles. A kill, but not instant.

He loaded another arrow. At the risk of being seen, he charged through the hedges. He had to cut the Erebus off before it had a chance to kill the Terran. He leaped over metal furniture and large urns, keeping his focus on the creature.

“What the hell? Get out of my yard!”

The woman rushed him, but Bryce darted around her. When the Erebus lumbered in front of him, he raised his weapon and fired. A clean shot to the middle. The creature dropped like a fallen log, crushing the furniture it landed on.

Bryce loaded the crossbow again. No time to celebrate the kill. He had to worry about the possibility of other Erebus in the area, along with the Terran woman who had seen him. Instead of running away screaming, as he’d expected her to do, she stared, wide-eyed in horror. Not at him, but the Erebus. Her body trembled as she shuffled backward, mumbling incomprehensible words.

An unexpected sense of familiarity washed over him. He couldn’t draw his attention away from her slim figure, the way her long brown hair flowed over her shoulders. Far more attractive than he’d pictured the Terrans when others talked about them. He took a closer glance. Lalia? How had she traveled so far from home without anyone knowing? She was no stranger, and definitely not Terran. Or, perhaps she was simply a doppelganger of the woman he’d once loved. He had the sudden urge to comfort her, relieve her worry. Hold her in his arms the way he had many years ago. But what if the missing princess had somehow made her way to a planet unaware life existed beyond their own? After she’d left Hemera and him behind without so much as a goodbye, he’d searched everywhere. Though not once had he thought to look on Terra.

A ground-shattering bellow pierced the night. Bryce spun around, finding himself face-to-face with another Erebus. It stared at him with beady red eyes. Thick black goop dripped from its mouth.

Bryce raised his bow, but the creature slammed him with one of its tentacles, flinging him back. The Erebus lunged at Lalia.

Rolling to his knees, Bryce aimed and fired. He hit the alien from behind, launching it forward. Onto his former lover. Slinging the bow over his shoulder, he raced toward her. The creature’s tentacles still pulsed, even though dead. Careful not to trip himself up, he shoved his hands under the creature’s torso and heaved it off her.

Lalia stood immediately and wiped the black goop from her clothes, as if she hadn’t been flattened by an alien. “They weren’t supposed to follow me. I was supposed to be safe here.”

BRYCE (Galactic Defenders #1)

A dedicated Defender…

Bryce fell in love once, but after Lalia was ripped away from him, he locked his heart from feeling anything for anyone else. Instead, he devotes his life to the Galactic Alliance, killing every bloodthirsty Erebus he comes across.

A shunned princess…

Lalia Comosova fell in love with the wrong man. When her parents learned of her transgressions, they sent her to Earth to hide her error in judgment from the rest of the kingdom.

A second chance?

When these lovers are reunited after many years apart, they have a chance to find happiness together. But fate steps in and threatens to rip them apart as it did years ago.

Canadian Summer Adventures - Who wants to EXPLORE this summer?

What interesting adventures do you have
planned for the summer?

Week long trips? Day trips? Exploring? Picnics?

Having two young kids who will be out of school, the pressure to plan is on again. Outside of a few weeks of day camp, swimming lessions and eldest minion's 10 day trip for leadership camp, there are some local adventures I'd love to try with them this year.

My main driving inspiration to explore this summer, are CAVES! I've written about caves in 2 of my books so far, and still can't get enough. My obsession is the magnificent structures and hidden treasures that lay beneath the surface. I adore the mystery and intrigue, along with the geographic anomalies you can find deep inside these remarkable places. The mineral deposits, how time, water and wear have defined these remote spaces into spectacular places for adventure. Oh, the extra story inspirations I expect to find inside these gems!!!

Closest to home and top of the list are:

http://tyendinagacaves.blogspot.ca/

http://www.bonnecherecaves.com/

Considering I've never actually ventured inside a cave yet, myself, I'm grateful for the amazing photgraphic adventures I've indulged in thus far. My two stories that incorporate my love of caves are:

Dragon Temptation - a 1 Night Stand Story
&
A Cougar Among Wolves - A Black Hills Wolves story.

Dragon Temptation
Blurb:

Cindy Dunham has become sexually emaciated, after a long dry spell and no prospect of romance in her near future. With her best friend’s upcoming wedding, loneliness is taking the lead, and she is starving for erotic rhapsody. The prospect of a blind date for the nuptials is embarrassing, but a necessary evil. The match Madame Evangeline finds for her leaves her reeling with conflict and jealousy. Will she ever get her carnal hunger gratified?

Yong Li, is no longer satisfied being the third wheel in his brother’s love life. Desperate to branch out and have an experience all his own, he is fraught with his ancient affliction that runs interference with the prospect of any normal relationship. Having had a life altering 1 Night Stand before, he seeks the help of his old friend, Madame Eve to find a new mate just for him.

A Cougar Among Wolves
Blurb:

A sadistic attack leaves Klaya, a Puma Clan Cougar, critically injured and the last of her family ferociously slain. She stumbles into Black Hills Wolf territory and collapses. Now under the protection of the pack, she finds herself whisked away to hide out in a cave until her old friend the alpha returns. Potentially the last of her shifter kind, she has nothing left to lose, but her life and a chance to avenge her brother.

After a dangerous rescue, on the edge of pack territory, Seth and Rogue take a woman on the brink of death back to the pack. Her identity and why she was brutalized is a mystery. The pieces soon fit together proving this assault was no coincidence. The Black Hills Wolves pack faces a bigger threat than they could even imagine. The trio soon find themselves on a tumultuous journey of life and death and relentless lust.

So tell me, what adventures do you plan to embark on over the summer?

Happy reading,

Author Life & Summer Loving (@KaceyHammell) #Summer #Canada #Writing #Fun

Good morning!

It's been a great summer already -- or at least June.  What's been happening around here? Well, look for sequels to come your way, readers! I've been busy on Canadian Muscle 2, and have an outline of Stirred by Love 2 as well. There are some other books in the works, I received rights back from a publisher, plus another story I want to revamp and share with everyone. It has been a crazy eight months for me -- health wise, personally and professionally -- but all is good.

With Haidee, a "Hammell's Heroine"
In May I enjoyed a fun-filled few days in our nation's capital at the RTC 2016 Book Signing. I loved visiting with readers I'd met at the 2015 one, and new readers this year! Of course it was fantabulous seeing some of my street team/reader group there as well. These ladies are so inspiring and I can't wait to share all the exclusive excerpts and goodies with them as I write new stories.

With Shirley & Sharon, 2 "Hammell's Heroine" Members

And of course, my author pals who are just too amazing for mere words.

3 of the best authors I know and adore:
(L to R: Me, Jessica E Subject, Layna Pimental, Kali Willows)

With my college grad!
June has been a bit of bat-shit crazy!! LOL It really has. A lot of birthdays, my oldest child just turned 20 AND finished her Nursing course in college! Time has flown by. I have another graduation in a couple of weeks, my youngest son/child graduates from grade 8 as well. It boggles the mind how old THEY are. Not me, no not in the least, they get older not their mothers! *g*  The years have flown by so quickly, I'm not sure how to keep up...or hold that empty nest feeling away in the coming years. Locking them in their rooms would be too much right? Sigh. What's a mom to do? *g*

We don't have any huge plans for this summer. My older 2 kids are of course working, so will be a lot of days with the youngest and writing! That's all I hope to do, but I promised him some day trips here and there. We haven't figured out an itinerary yet but we'll see. We really enjoy leaving the "school days routine" out the window during the summer and fly by the seat of our pants.

But lots to look forward to. New books, fun summer days and some great reading as well! Been too long since I spent a few days just pleasure reading. Time to get back to that as well.

Be sure to check out the "Author's Appearances" page. I have another book signing in September in London, Ontario. More info on that HERE.

Until next month,
Live, Love, Laugh.
