Clean Sweeps with @elle_rush

Spring has sprung.
The grass is riz.
I wonder where
The birdies is?

It’s here. Old Man Winter can take a hike. And with that, he can take all the salt and sand from the streets, and the unwashed windows with five months of dust spatters on them, and all the extra layers of clothes.

You know what I’m getting at, right?  It’s time for spring cleaning.

Out with the old, in with the new. So long, clothes that don’t fit anymore, or that you know you won’t want next winter. Goodbye, shoes you found at the back of the closet that have a hole in the sole that you never got around to throwing away last fall.

Some people tend to accumulate things. I’m a person who never throws anything away. I went through my filing cabinet and found 1-year warranty cards for things that I bought in 2005. I wish I were kidding. My recycling bin is filled to overflowing this week.

Cleaning is not a romantic idea but it’s a fact of life. (Unless you have a significant other who does half of the cleaning and the laundry, in which case it is a labour shared and still not fun but it's only half the work.) On the plus side, you can reward yourself for all your hard work with a book at the end of the day.

I got a little lucky. My spring cleaning was combined with moving, so everything was getting scrubbed and washed anyway. I purged bags and bags of junk, and put together half a dozen boxes to go to Salvation Army and the like. My house is literally lighter than it used to be. [Correction – not everything got scrubbed. I still haven’t done the windows. But I did do the kitchen cupboards.]

I even did the junk drawers. And my bookshelves. Yes, there is stuff in my bookcase that can go. I can’t bear to throw out a book, although I have recycled a few when I’ve had to buy replacements copies. I may be the only person you’ve ever met who has bought three copies of French/English and Spanish/English paperback dictionaries and used them to death.

I often read books I enjoy more than once, which is a problem when I don’t enjoy them. I probably have a shelf’s worth of books that I don’t plan on reading a second time, or that have been in storage for so long I’ve forgotten why I kept them in the first place. What do to do with them?

In Winnipeg, we can donate them to the Children’s Hospital Book Market.  (You may have something similar in your area.)  You can trade them in a used book store, give them to a second-hand/charity store, or donate them to your library if they are new enough and in good enough condition.

I’ve recently discovered a third option.  Long-term health care facilities, nursing homes, and women’s shelters often are looking for books too. If you have some good quality paperbacks and hardcovers, consider donating them at a centre near you.  Call the main desk and ask if they have a library that takes donations.  Romances are always appreciated. Mysteries are too. I’ve found that biographies – particularly about sporting figures – are also very popular.

This is less of a problem now that I have an e-reader. Whether you have one book on it or a thousand, it still only takes up half an inch on your bookshelf.

If you’ve done your spring cleaning, or are saving it for March Break, I salute you.

May I offer you a free read to celebrate after you are done?

Free e-copy of SCREEN IDOL - Hollywood to Olympus Book 1

When an actor who will do anything for a part has to romance a woman on a fundraising mission who wants nothing to do with him, he’d better hope Hollywood magic is real enough to give them both a happily-ever-after.

Sydney Richardson should have trusted her instincts and locked the door when a Greek god appeared on her doorstep at sunrise. After months of work, she needs every second of the day to wrap up a two-part fundraiser for burn victims like herself and she can't afford to waste time with a TV hunk, no matter how good he looks in a toga.

Chris Peck, worshipped by millions as Zeus on the hit drama Olympus, desperately wants to prove to the producers of a soon-to-be-cast romantic comedy that he doesn’t need fight scenes or special effects to make the jump to the big screen. Acting as the slave-for-a-day in the show’s fan appreciation contest was supposed to cement his everyman credibility but the winner wants nothing to do with him.

Chris is captivated by the woman who refuses to fawn over his looks and fame, and he promises to put her fundraising efforts over the top if she’ll spend the day with him. However, just when he convinces Sydney they could have a chance together, the movie’s producers offer him an audition that would mean breaking his promise and leaving Sydney in the lurch. The king of the gods has until sunset to prove to his new off-screen love interest that Hollywood magic and reality can co-exist.

What will you do with an extra hour of daylight? #daylightsavingstime #giveaway @jsubject

For those who live in areas that adhere to daylight savings time, tonight we put our clocks ahead one hour. It means getting up an hour earlier, and an extra hour of light at the end of the day. I've noticed the days are already getting longer, and this gives us more time to spend outside without having to worry about the darkness interfering.

With the extra hour, it means I can let the kids play outside after supper, take the dog for a walk without having to worry about wearing reflective clothing. And, I can even relax outside with a book before having to get the kids settled for bed.

So, what do you plan on doing with your extra hour of daylight?

If you're looking for something to read with your extra hour, be sure to enter my Goodreads giveaway for a signed print book of Alien Next Door: The Complete Series, and check out my new release, Made For Her, as well as my 99¢ box set, The Complete Underground Series....

Making Merry - and Making Plans

How do you celebrate this festive time of year?

We all have traditions - many of which involve food (feasting), family and friends. I always look forward to Christmas Day, which we celebrate with my side of the family. We have turkey with all the trimmings = the hostess makes the turkey but other parts of the feast come from guests. (I'm taking the pie this year.) There are gifts, of course, too, but the company is really the best part.

On the other side of our family, our tradition has changed in recent years, and this too is part of the magic of tradition. We think it has to be always the same, but actually, there's room for modification and variation. Mr. Math's mom used to make a roast goose dinner on Christmas Eve and we all went there. She was a fabulous cook and it was so delicious that none of us dared to try to cook the meal instead. Since she passed away, and Mr. Math's father shortly thereafter, we modified the tradition. I've been hosting a dinner for both sides of the family early in December (usually the weekend of first Advent) when everyone's calendar has a little more open space. I did roast goose the first year, but now understand why my MIL found the geese stressful to make. They are hard to predict, which makes it hard to time everything else to be done when they are. Last year, we had roast duck instead, and this year, we had prime rib. I think I'll go back to the duck again next year. They're more like goose, but easy peasy - which helps when you have the chaos of company!

Traditions can also be added to our celebrations. We used to have a neighbor from Scandinavia who burned a torch all night long on the solstice. Mr. Math thought this was wonderful, and it was neat to see the flame against the night. We now have a garden torch which Mr. Math lights on the night of the solstice (but we don't leave it burning all night long, just so long as we're watching it). This year, we had torrential rains on the solstice, so the torch had to stay in the garage, but there will be next year. (I lit some candles in the house instead to call back the sun.)

A bit part of this time of year for me is reviewing the last year and planning for the year ahead. I usually do that on the solstice. I've updated my work schedule and my publication list, and there's a post on that scheduled on my blog for January 4.

Of course, a part of this festive season is sending greetings and good wishes to friends and associates, many of whom are distant. We don't send or receive as many physical cards as was once the case, but I still send some - and we do receive wonderful email wishes, too. It's the sentiment that counts!

One of my writing traditions is to publish a new book in the week between Christmas and New Year. This year, it's a new boxed set of my Prometheus Project urban fantasy romance series, which features fallen angel heroes on a quest to save humanity. They voluntarily shed their wings for the greater cause, fully intending to reclaim them once their quest is complete, but love (and determined heroines) change their mind each time. I love these books, and the contrast between a gritty dystopian future and the promise of love, and am excited to offer all four complete novels in a boxed set. Currently, The Prometheus Project Boxed Set is available only at iBooks and Kobo. It will deliver on December 29.

Another of my seasonal traditions as a writer is to thank my readers with a book sale at this time of year. The Crusader's Bride, which is the first book in my current medieval romance series the Champions of Saint Euphemia, is on sale now at iBooks and Kobo for just 99 cents. It'll be on sale at the other portals next week. The Champions of Saint Euphemia is a linked series I've wanted to write for a while. Each book is a medieval romance, but the series follows the journey of a company of knights (some Templars and some former-Templars) from Jerusalem to Europe as they deliver a sacred relic to the Temple in Paris. Someone wants the treasure and is willing to kill for it. These stories are entangled, with each hero and heroine adding to the overall story. The Crusader's Bride begins the quest, as Gaston leaves the order to claim his inheritance in France and finds himself in need of a bride. He picks Ysmaine, and gets far more in a wife than he ever expected.

It's a good time to begin the series, too. The second book, The Crusader's Heart, was published in October, and book #3, The Crusader's Kiss, will be published in January. Book #4, The Crusader's Vow, will finish up the originally planned series in April - but there's been a fifth book added. The Crusader's Handfast is being published in monthly installments, and the first one was published on December 15. Part Two comes out on January 15. The complete book will be available in July, in both print and digital editions. Also (!), The Crusader's Bride will be available in an audiobook in January. You can listen to a sample from that audiobook, narrated by Tim Gerard Reynolds, right here.

Talking about audiobooks brings us to another way I'm thanking readers this month. I'm participating in a promotion with over 50 authors called #XmasAudio. Many of us are giving away an audiobook per day for the month of December. Right now, my featured audio title is The Snow White Bride, which is a medieval Scottish romance set at Christmas. All you have to do for a chance to win is comment on this post on my blog. You can also search for other #XmasAudio giveaways with the hashtag, on Facebook and Twitter.

How do you celebrate this festive season?

I hope your month is merry and filled with good friends, good books and good cheer. See you in 2016!

August Audio

Do you listen to audiobooks?

I have to admit that I never did, until I started having them produced for my books. I had this idea that they'd be like old radio shows, with all the parts acted out by different actors and sound effects, and that maybe, just maybe, they'd be a little bit cheesy. Actually, they're lovely. An audiobook is like having someone read the story aloud to you. You can do other things while you listen. The bonus is that most narrators have truly lovely voices.

Of course, I have a reason for asking you this question. :-) Not only are my historical romances being produced in audio, but I have a contest this month on my blog. I'm giving away an audiobook per day for the month of August. It shakes out to be more than 31 books, though, since I'm posting each Saturday - I'll give away 35 audiobooks in all. Each Saturday, I list a different title, and the following Saturday, I give away seven copies of it. You can only win once, but this is a fabulous opportunity to try audiobooks for the first time.

Here's this week's contest - you could win an audiobook of The Snow White Bride, book #3 in my Jewels of Kinfairlie trilogy of medieval Scottish romances, just for commenting on this post on my blog. This series has been narrated by Saskia Maarleveld and I think she's done an awesome job. Have a listen, right here!

Even better, there are a number of authors participating in this promotion. We'll all using the hashtag #AugustAudio so you can find us. Alternatively, you can stalk my Twitter account (@Cooke_Delacroix) because each Saturday I tag all the participating authors.

Why an August audio promotion? Well, I have a new audiobook releasing on September 1. My medieval Scottish paranormal romance, The Renegade's Heart, is now available for pre-order. This is the first book in my True Love Brides series—all four of these books should be available in audio by the end of the year. They're being narrated by Saskia Maarleveld.

You can have a listen to samples from all of my audiobooks on my new Soundcloud page - even the audition for The Crusader's Bride by Tim Gerard Reynolds. I think you'll see why he got the job to narrate all of the Champions of Saint Euphemia series!

Don't miss your chance to try audiobooks! Hop on over to my blog and comment for your chance to win!

New Release ~ Hot Nights & Sexy Aliens for 99¢! Plus, enter to WIN $25 GC!

Hello! Well, Canada Day has passed, and the country is inching closer to celebrating 150 years. With the holiday falling in the middle of the week, we ended up having our family barbeque and fireworks Saturday night instead. Though, we did catch the city fireworks display on Wednesday night.

July 1st was also a special day for me for two other reasons. Back in 2011, my debut story, Celestial Seduction, was released with Decadent Publishing. So, I celebrated four years published. I also celebrated a new box set release, which contains two titles that are set in Ottawa, Canada's capital city.

To celebrate these two events, I've been on tour, sharing top ten lists, teasers, and extended excerpts. I've also hosted a contest for a $25 GC, and I wanted to give you all a chance to win. So, be sure to enter, then check out my new release and an extended excerpt below...

Extended Excerpt from Satin Sheets in Space, part of the An Alien to Love digital box set by Jessica E. Subject

As if reading her mind, he reached down, gathering her skirt. Goosebumps formed on her exposed legs from the cool breeze. But the heated desire racing through her body from his ravishing mouth burned them away with haste. She’d never been kissed so passionately.

With one hand holding her skirt tight, he slid his other between her legs, trailing his hand along the cloth of her thong. She shivered, awaiting penetration of any kind. She creamed against the small piece of fabric as he rubbed her swollen mound.

“Oh, that’s what I like.” He reached down to catch the juices running down her leg then grabbed a handful of material and ripped. “But these were getting in the way.”

Tossing her underwear away, he explored her slick folds. She whimpered as he brushed his finger along her clit. She wanted more, all of him. When he slid his digit inside, she moaned, her core tightening around him. Finally.

He kissed along her neck, nipping her skin, intensifying her pleasure. Two more fingers slipped into her. Weak-kneed, she rode up and down his digits, intense pressure welling deep within. She sucked in short, sharp breaths. Too much time had passed since she’d had anything but toys and her own appendages touching her most intimate spots.

In a blinding explosion, she released. “God, yes!”

She rode the exhilarating wave as he continued to pump her. Her muscles relaxed, but she still yearned for him. Their night had just begun.

“Why don’t we go somewhere else and continue this? We can get a room if you want.” She didn’t care where as long as they were off the street and had a little more privacy. The possibility of someone catching them excited her, but she didn’t want the rest of their time together interrupted.

“I have the perfect place, if you’re willing to trust me.”

How could she? She’d just met him, didn’t even know his name. Yet she refused to say no, couldn’t have him walk away and leave her alone and needy. She’d go wherever he wanted to take her, whether to a bondage dungeon or a closet. So long as he took her, over and over.

Because, for once, she’d found a guy who pleasured her without her asking. She planned to return the favor as soon as they left the alley.

With one hand gripping her ass, he skimmed a finger back across her slick folds. “Well, do you?”

Only aware of her growing need, she nodded.

He returned to her slippery heat, plunging in and out. “First, tell me your name.”

“Danyka.” Her name rolled out as she moaned with his movements.

“Okay, Danyka, hold onto me.”

How could she not? He’d transformed her knees, her entire body, to jelly with his touch. She already gripped his sleeves, afraid if she let go she’d fall, slide down the wall.

Pulling some kind of remote from his pocket, he pressed the single white button on its surface. He slipped the device back into his pouch then leaned forward to reclaim her mouth.

She had her eyes closed, her lips pressed against his, when the sensation started. First, a tingling in her hands and feet, as he swept his digits deep inside her. The buzz spread up her arms and legs until it engulfed her entire body. She no longer sensed the ground below her.

The man continued to drive his fingers into her core with vigor, ridding her of the urge to pull away and find out what was happening to her. She landed with a thud, feeling returning to her limbs. Nothing stopped the man who held her, though. He continued to ravage her mouth, her jaw, her neck, keeping her pressed against the wall.

But something felt different. Gone was the hard brick pressing through her corset and against her skin. She reached behind to brush her hand along the surface. Soft. Almost like cushioned satin.

With a whimper, she pushed the strange man away. Where was she? What had she been thinking? This is the stupidest, most insane thing I’ve ever done.

The Prince Charming she’d had the fortune of being set up with peered down at her, his gaze intense and filled with lust. “My name is Galan, and we’re in my spaceship.”

At least she now knew his name, but wait…. Spaceship? She stared at the man, disillusioned. She could think of no other explanation for how they had traveled to a new location with the press of a button. Oh God, she’d been abducted by an alien. How would she get out of this situation? The first time she’d done something spur-of-the-moment, and she’d ended up being finger-fucked by an extraterrestrial.

Or was this some kind of elaborate stunt Josh had pulled off? But why? He was on his honeymoon, unable to enjoy his handiwork. Her body grew numb; a loud ringing pierced her eardrums. She could no longer think with the clouds invading her mind. Then she blacked out.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer!

No more winter! Travel to a Space Station or Another Planet for March Break

Foreverary is finally over! March is here with warmer temperatures. Yay! The snowbanks are slowly melting away, driveways are becoming visible, and the streets are going back to their normal width. Everything looks dirty from all of the sand and gravel used to makes the roads less slippery, but this won't last. The trees have already started to bud. Soon, crocuses and tulips will be bursting through the ground to bring us the first colours of spring. Robins will return, and the rain will make everything look fresh and new again. I can't wait!

Copyright: / 123RF Stock Photo
But, until then, some Canadians are travelling south for March Break, which is next week. While my family has no plans to go anywhere, I know some families going down to Florida, hoping to catch an early burst of summer before returning to our much cooler temperatures.

If you're like me, and are staying home for March Break, there are other ways to get away at least for a short period of time. You can watch a movie, read a book, or listen to an audio book.

It's also time for spring cleaning, right? I like to put my earplugs in, and listen to an audio book while tidying up, doing the dishes, and other chores.

With the audio books I have out, you can visit a space station, or travel to another planet. Why not take a listen and find out if you'd like to visit one of my worlds?

You can listen to samples from my other audio books on SoundCloud. And if you'd like to WIN one of my audio book titles, you can pop on over to my blog and enter there.

My audio book titles are available from Audible, Amazon, and iTunes.

Until next month!
